Zeit: Hagen wird erste Bundesuniversität

Mit ihren Plädoyer für ein Einführung von Bundesuniversitäten hatte Bundeswissenschaftsministerin Annette Schavan (CDU) Wirbel ausgelöst. Spätestens nach dem Ende des Exzellenzwettbewerbs werde man darüber reden müssen, hatte sie gesagt. Damit lenkte Schavan die Fantasien der Öffentlichkeit auf die großen Universitäten, die im Exzellenzwettbewerb gesiegt haben – oder noch siegen können, wie die Humboldt-Universität in Berlin.

Tatsächlich aber richtet sich Schavans Augenmerk zunächst auf eine Hochschule, die nur wenigen beim Thema Bundesuniversität einfällt: auf die Fernuniversität Hagen. „Schavan will es, Merkel will es, und Nordrhein-Westfalen will es auch“, sagt ein Insider, der namentlich nicht genannt werden will, dem Tagesspiegel. Der Staatsrechtler Ulrich Battis, Professor an der Humboldt-Universität und selbst von 1984 bis 1993 Rektor der Fernuniversität, sei von der Regierung bereits mit einem Gutachten beauftragt worden. Battis solle klären, ob die Verfassung die Bundesfinanzierung der Hochschule erlaube.

SZ: Bei der Wahl der Hochschule können Uni Rankings Orientierung geben, nicht jede Information ist hilfreich.

Rankings teilen Hochschulen in Sieger und Verlierer ein. Die Listen helfen dabei, sich einen ersten Eindruck über Studienangebote zu verschaffen. „Ich würde die Wahl meiner Hochschule aber nicht von einem Ranking allein abhängig machen“, sagt Stefan Grob, Sprecher des Deutschen Studentenwerks in Berlin. Auch andere Faktoren sollten über die Studienortwahl entscheiden.

C.T.: Egypt: The Terror of Free Information, The Promise for Higher Education

Information technology has two faces: control and freedom. Egypt showed us the power of free exchange of communication (the IT face of freedom). During the whole of human history, a small minority has inevitably controlled „truth“ and thus power. Information and communication technologies (ICT) wash away these suddenly vulnerable autocratic sand castles guarding truth, in countries and in human institutions. Who can now scoff at the social Web and call it fluff? How can educational institutions continue to marginalize the social Web, labeling it as unimportant or undesirable? How can higher education, dedicated to the free exchange of ideas, not fully embrace this most extraordinary medium?
